Freeware Software Links

I (Lightfoot) have a Mac, so it's very likely this list will include more Mac programs than those for Windows.
I tried to include mostly programs I've used before to at least some degree, but many of these programs I use myself.

Graphics Freeware

Gimp- Mac+Win
An open-source alternative to Photoshop, etc.
The Mac version requires X11 to be installed.
Gimpshop- Mac+Win
A verison of Gimp that has an interface closer to Photoshop.
The Mac version requires X11 to be installed.
Scribus- Mac+Win
An open-source alternative to Indesign, Quark, Pagemaker, etc.
Inkscape- Mac+Win

The Mac version requires X11 to be installed.
Drawit Lite- Mac
The free, slightly feature limited version of Drawit, a vector drawing program.
Seashore- Mac
A light-weight fully Mac image editor based on Gimp. It's early in development, but it's very impressive so far.
Pixia- Win
A popular painting program. I'm not sure if it's more of a replacement for Photoshop, or for Painter.
Imagewell- Mac
"Quickly resize, crop, watermark, edit your images and then upload them to the web." Batch editing requires updating to the shareware version.
Xee- Mac
An image viewer with some features not found in Apple's Preview. It can flip through all of the pictures in a folder. It can copy and move images, as well as turn or flip them.

"DropJPG makes it easy to convert images from most formats to JPEG. Just drag an image or a folder of images onto its icon and they will be converted."
Thumbscrew- Mac
Drag & drop batch thumbnail creation. It can even rotate or add borders.
I use this for the thumbnails in the gallery section.
Delineate- Mac+Win
It can turn raster (pixel-based) images into vector-based SVG images. Similar to the old Adobe Streamline.
ExifRenamer- Mac
Rename JPEG photos based on the time and date information embedded in the file.

Video Freeware

VLC- Mac+Win
Probably the best video player. It even plays DVDs.
Jahshaka- Mac+Win
"The worlds first open source, hardware accelerated editing and effects system."
MPEG Streamclip- Mac+Win
This is a great program to edit or cut up video. It can also compress video in certain ways, and split the audio and video into seperate files. At least in general it does not convert compressed video into uncompressed video.
iSquint- Mac
The little free version of VisualHub allows you to convert video to play on your iPod.

3d Modelling Freeware

Notepad++- Win
Seems like a great choice for a text-based html editor.

The great browser. ...although the Mac version isn't as far along as the PC version. Mac-users might want to pick either Camino, Opera, or Safari.
Camino- Mac
A Mac browser based on the Mozilla engine (like Firefox). It currently does not support plugins or themes, but it does have several features not in Firefox by default.
Transmission- Mac
I don't use BitTorrent that much, but this is a good Mac client. It's small and light.
CyberDuck- Mac
FTP & SFTP
SiteSucker- Mac
Download entire websites. It can even "localize the files it downloads, allowing you to browse a site offline."
